SPECIAL NEEDS
DENTISTRY

We go the extra mile to make your mini smile!

Most people make peace with the fact that the dentist isn’t enjoyable – but not us! Our goal is never to “make it through” a visit. We’re all about making it warm, welcoming, and surprisingly fun – especially for kiddos with fears, concerns, and sensitivities.

Happy Visits and Desensitization

At your first visit, Dr. Abbey will spend time discussing expectations, home care, past dental experiences, and ways to adjust the dental environment according to your child’s needs. The main goal for this first visit is an exam – if anything else gets done, that’s just a bonus!

Your child can touch the toothbrush to their finger, turn the light off and on, or listen to the dental suction – all part of desensitization. In certain situations, we may suggest a follow-up “happy visit,” which is typically a review of the sights and sounds, with lots of praise and prizes to wrap things up!

Defeating the Dental “Scaries”

During your appointment, we encourage you to take videos and pictures to review with your child before the next appointment. This helps remind your child of what to expect, and even what to look forward to!

Social stories can also be helpful in preparing your child for their appointment. Please remember to only use positive language when discussing the dentist. We never say scary words like “hurt” or “shot,” because even WE don’t like those words!
